Greetings and Merry Meet!
There are lots of things going on in the house. Firstly I have a new critter, technically my son's, but you know who is feeding and caring for it, right? His name is Randall, and he is a Veiled Chameleon. I plan to do some macro camera work with him, he is endlessly fascinating with his colors and textures. These shot are just quick ones shot through his habitat, I will do some more serious shots soon. I think he will be a good model, he moves very slowly!
A less wonderful addition is this big ole container box parked in my front yard. Hmmmmm.

Don't get me wrong, the reason it is there is a good one, it is for the construction of a much needed sidewalk. Stimulus money at work. This sidewalk will lead to the high school just north of me. We needed it back when my kids were in school, kids have to walk in the street in places, so we really need it, and I am more than happy to give a piece of my yard. However I did not count on my yard being the central staging area for the whole project. I have the best chunk of flat space, and at the top of our hill. The same reasons I love my yard are why I was chosen to host this eyesore for a few months. This is my view from the house, you cannot see from the angle, but our street is where the big orange cones are. The dog is going to go nuts with construction workers in my yard every day :-) I hope there are many big handsome men, that would be ok with me. Lemonade, you know?
I also have my Lapidary grinder up and running. I need a new pulley collar on my motor before I can spend endless hours polishing gem stones, but I was able to take a chunk of unidentified rock from a bulk lot of very rough gems, and grind away till I could see it was a chunk of beautiful agate! roughed my knuckles good too!
In the last 24 hours I have done pottery, made EO candles, fired the kiln, polished an agate, made incense, and of course the usual domestic stuff like make the hub's favorite soup for Sunday dinner.
I have shipments of glassware coming so I can decant some tinctures I have made for myself, jar up loose incenses for the shop, that I will sell in the new glass bottles with corks, they are so pretty!

oh, and I almost forgot, a new incense in the shop!
My Father-in-Law is having one of those Big Birthdays with a zero on one side, so the clan is gathering from the far places of the Earth. I am going to be so tied up with that, that I will not be right on top of things in my shops. Thankfully we do not have to travel. I will still be around, but shipping will be delayed. Not too much delay, but not my usual 24 hour turn around. I thought about going into vacation mode, but decided not to, because it will not be too long. But if you want something from me the first week in October, you may want to order this weekend! I will be filling orders through Monday Oct 1, and then again Monday Oct 8th. In between, it will be hit or miss, mostly miss!
Also I should tell folks, Etsy did not like me selling cauldrons, since I did not make them, and they do not fit their definition of supply, as it is not a craft/art supply. Buttons or thread or such, that are used to make something is ok, but a finished item that is used as is , is not allowed. I looked around before I started selling them and plenty of other folks had non craft items, but I got a nastygram asking me to stop. Fair enough, it is their playground. So I have my cauldrons on my own site. I declare them "not against " my terms of service on my own site! Easy for me, as I make my rules to suite myself!! LOL
The scent is very subtle and soft. I used green tea that I ground up to a
fine powder, and instead of water I steeped some of the tea leaves and
used the brew for the liquid in this recipe. This is a great scent to
use to sweeten up your house after cooking. In japan, green tea incense
is used not so much for it's own fragrance but to clear out cooking
odors..but I personally love the scent itself, and if it is utilitarian
is a nice bonus!
has been a while in the making. I used a lot of herbs to get these!
Lots of experiments and going back to the drawing board a few times. I
wanted the blends to burn more or less at the same rate. And smell nice
all together. I admit, the Water Scent still burns slower than the
others, but not by much. They all burn for 25-30 (or more) minutes for
me. Some of these herbs are not recommended for pregnant women, so don't
use if you are. I drew letters on each cone E, A, F, W to keep myself
from getting confused. I did not do that with some of the prototypes,

Faerie Frolics is a light and joyful fragrance, though complex and sophisticated in it’s aromatic ingredients.
Orange Peel for luck and good fortune
Benzoin gum for purification
Orris root (Iris root) is to find and hold love
Frankincense to open you to spirituality
Sandalwood to chase away negativity and draw in love
Rose petals to attract fae
Basil to sooth tempers
Apple hydrosol for immortality (or at least long life) and it may attract a unicorn or two…..couldn’t hurt could it? I made the hydrosol myself in my little moonshine still from some wonderfully fragrant organic apples.
Together these aromas transport you to a fae garden with greens and florals and fruits. Is that a sprite over there, dancing in a sunbeam?

As you my readers know, I am pretty bad about keeping up with social stuff. I get too much into my own head, making clay stuff or incense stuff or catnip mice, or just messing with the kids and animals. So last week I saw an ad for an Etsy app that would organize your social media, Facebook and Twitter and several others, including here on the blog. It was has a monthly fee, and supposedly you can use their calender and your etsy store, and quickly lay out all your social media for months.
Well, somehow when I signed up a database error accured, and it has my shop address wrong. So nothing works. One aspect will work, kind of, because the dialog box for that part is editable and I can manually fix the address for my shop, but the main part, the interfacing of a calender with my items for sale so I can pick items to blog or tweet about, is not usable. I can see it is a simple database
glitch. I have been married to a software engineer for 30 years, and have slapped a few simple programs together myself, so I am not a total idiot about this stuff.
Well, the link for customer service says he, the owner/programer will answer all questions within 24 hours. So I wrote an email to him last Thursday. On Friday he sent me a form letter welcoming me and asking if I needed any help. I replyed back to that saying YES I do need his help. Still no reply.
On Saturday, still not hearing from him, I got a note from Paypal that my membership to this app had been cancelled. No refund, not that I was aking for one, just a cancellation of future charges. Then I got a notice of a service ticket, saying case closed. This was sent to the email I use for paypal, not the one I registered with this app or used to correspond to customer service.
I did not want to be cancelled, I wanted the app to work! I wanted a reply from the service! I wrote yet again on Saturday after I got the closed ticket notice, and still no response. I wrote again this morning. No answer. I still have access to this broken service, I guess for the month I have paid for, but is a sorry thing that doesn't work right. I can understand it having a bug, but damn, why not answer emails! I was nice. well, in the begining anyway. So fellow Etsy sellers, hang on to your hard earned money.
I am trying to talk the hubs into making an app for me that will do what this one promissed. I know I can get an answer from customer service that way! No app, no dinner! lol
Indian Creek Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02480373054786844915noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32423027.post-34898164852876543702012-06-26T13:42:00.002-05:002012-06-26T13:42:38.335-05:00Just a quick check in, yup I am alive

I am a busy busy old (crazy cat) lady this summer. I planted a little garden of my own this year. First time. My dad, who has been gone for more than 35 years, wow, was a great farmer. I am in my own way trying to be more like him and his family. He was an old timey farmer, planted by the moon, used his Old Farmer's Almanac for everything, could use dousing rods to find water, all kinds of things that are lost to our modern life. His mother, my Granny, well she could do things that scared my (white wonder bread ) mom but good! I have to chuckle. Poor Mom.

So, now I know I can grow cucumbers! They are yeilding more than we can eat, so tommorow I am sending some with my husband to his office for him to share. The Tomatoes are looking good but unripe, so if all the green ones turn to nice red ones, I may have to learn to can. I have helped can as a child (remember Dad was a great farmer, so Mom was a great canner) but never on my own. I can freeze them for sure, no great alchemy there.

I have family coming to visit this weekend, my husband's little brother and his wife. They are both teachers so off for the summer, and the kids are grown, so they are drifting across country visiting friends and family as they go. We are right in the middle of the lower 48, so we make a good midway in their journey, it should be fun.

In the mean time I have made a few ceramic pieces, some incense, and poured some soy candles.

In incense, my current project is to make a set of four scents, each one representing one of the four elements, earth, air, water, fire. I have my recipes fairly set, now I am just tweaking till they all burn at exactly the same rate. I will be done soon, I think.

With candles, I am working on pure clean ones, no dyes or perfumes. I am using a few Essential Oils to make aromatherapy quality candles, more on that to come!

goon run, must cook and clean and such

I love sandalwood. It is rick and deep and sultry. So when I first started making incense, of course I made sandalwood cones. I wanted to use a good quality wood, so I chose chips to grind up myself. That smelled great, but boy was it a ton of work. I needed about 3 hours just to grind enough for a batch of 50 cones. Sandalwood is hard, real hard. I talked to some other incense makers, and basically found out that I would need a Chinese Herb and Wood grinder, a piece of equipment that herbalists use to finely powder wood and roots and other gifts from the earth. They are expensive, too expensive for a one woman cottage business. So what to do? I need to switch to already ground sandalwood. I hated doing that, as buying stuff already ground up usually means it has been exposed to air and lost essential oils, that thing that makes incense smell good and not just like burning wood. So I had to find a good one. I did a lot of looking, then chose an importer who is a one woman show like myself. She imports from Nepal and other exotic places. I got my new shipment yesterday. Oh baby is this stuff good. It is rich and dark, burgandy colored like my chips, not red or orange like so many powders I have seen. It smells heavenly. I just made up a batch of cones and I am so happy with them. This is going to be ok. More than ok, really good. I do not have to do it all myself. I can let someone else grind my sandalwood. My poor hands are thankful. But I am still going to grind up my resins by hand in a morter and pestle, and grind my rose petals in a food processor. That cast iron grain mill I was using to grind sandalwood chips, well maybe I will use it as intended, to grind corn into corn meal/flour. Corn is not as hard as sandalwood!
Now to make more Aloeswood cones. I have been out of aloeswood for a couple of weeks, but that arrived yesterday with the sandalwood. MMMM my work area smells so good.
Indian Creek Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02480373054786844915noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32423027.post-8962379702354745692012-03-15T10:50:00.000-05:002012-03-15T10:50:01.222-05:00Modern Cat

coming to an incense cone near you....I went out for a wildcrafting walk, camera in hand of course :-)
I have this drying now to be ground up and made into incense...this very bough....it smells great right now, the art of it is to make sure it still smells good after it is burned....a challenge I am glad to take up. This could count as a I Heart macro shot tooo.......
Hi wonderful bloggy folk! I have not blogged in a few weeks, despite my best intentions. I usually am not so busy business wise in December and January, as most of my customers buy from me well ahead of the big commercial holiday, but this year I had an actual Christmas season. Then January, well usually in January I am most thankful for my husband's paycheck, because we sure could not live off of mine! That is still true, however January was a record breaker for me in both shops this time! wooohooo!
I passed a milestine with my clay pieces, since the shop (IndianCreekStudios)began, I have sold more than 500 pieces! My incense shop ( LittleHippieMama )is doing well and will certainly pass the clay in number of pieces sold at some point, after only about three months of selling incense I have sold about 250 packs of incense. Since I make it all by hand, the two shops keep me busy, but in the best way, making things. Nothing could be better :-) Here are some new things:
Hello folks out in blogger land. I have been uber busy between making incense for my new shop (LittleHippieMama) and trying to keep IndianCreekStudios well stocked, not to mention Yule and Christmas...and house keeping. Ug. Hate house keeping.

I did make a new incense recipe, Lemongrass! Love it. I have some new aromatics to experiment with (coltsfoot, tonka beans, irish moss). Maybe something good will blossom.
I have broken down my normal work space because that is where the tree goes...and relocated my work to other parts of the house. It messes with my mojo somewhat, but it is temporary....sigh...

So to give you some meat to this blog post, I want to share with you a frugal living tip.
Homemade Dishwasher Detergent.

I have looked over the interwebs and I will summarize:

Super cheap and easy......

1/2 Borax (20 mule Team stuff) and
1/2 Baking Soda

mix together and store in an old spagetti sauce jar. Use 1 heaping tablespoon per load.

Put good cheap white vinegar in the rinse agent dispenser.

This method is supposed to be good for fighting hard water, which I have

Little more fancy version......
1 cup Washing soda (found indetergent aisle)
1 cup Borax
(20 mule Team stuff)
½ cup salt
(sea salt is what recipe called for, I do not see why the cheap stuff would not be ok)
½ cup citric acid ("Fruit Fresh" in Grocery Store, I hear unsweetened lemonaide powder works too)

if you want to go extra fancy, add 40-80 drops of your favorite essential oil, like grapefruit or lavender, that have anti microbial properties and of course smell great. My dishwasher gets so hot, I do not need a germ killer, so I am skipping this step.

Same dose, one Tablespoon per load.

I am going to make some today, provided I get everything from the store this morning, and give it a try.

must go scrub clay from the floor before the tree arrives...see yas
Hi, just a quick personal update..not that anyone should really care :-)

I had a rather rough experience with a rootcanal yesterday, it took 3 times the normal

amount of numbing to work on the tooth. My doc is great, she has done several rootcanals

on my teeth before and this is the first time I had trouble. She almost gave up getting me

numb enough to work, and I had to endure a few unpleasant, um, explorations, to find the right

place to inject the numb juice. I slept off the drugs yesterday, and today I am sore and grumpy. I hope to get some work done today but I do not expect to be online all that much till tommorow, so I will see y'all then.
